Broncos coach Sean Payton is urging for improvement from rookie quarterback Bo Nix, but his primary concern rests on the impact of Denver’s stagnant running game.
Javonte Williams is struggling, averaging just 2.1 yards per carry, with 40 yards on 19 carries and no gains over nine yards, as the Broncos have stumbled to an 0-2 start. Payton acknowledges that the blame is not solely on Williams, pointing fingers at the coaches and the offensive line. However, he has issued Williams a wake-up call heading into Week 3.
“I’ve seen it in training camp,” Payton remarked, referring to Williams’ potential. “I’m looking forward to seeing it manifest this season. In the meantime, other players need a chance to shine. Jaleel McLaughlin is one that requires more touches. We’ve also talked about Tyler Badie. Patience is key, but eventually, it starts up front. You want to see these players execute in games.”
Badie recorded 16 yards in Sunday’s loss to the Steelers, showing flashes of becoming a key contributor. Payton emphasized that it’s his responsibility to create opportunities for Badie.
“As a coach and a spectator, I have to focus on what Badie brings to the table,” Payton stated regarding Badie’s standout performance. “His name was highlighted in various red zone or situational plays that we couldn’t capitalize on. It’s not an oversight; we just need to be more attuned to the flow of the game and make the necessary adjustments.”
As for Nix, who has four interceptions and a 51.0 passer rating, Payton noted that the rookie processed the game well against Pittsburgh, despite the setbacks, including a poorly judged throw in the red zone that was intercepted.
“There are a few aspects visible on tape. Early in the game, we noticed pressure forcing him out of the pocket. Later in the second half, he had a cleaner pocket but hurried his decisions,” Payton explained. “It’s about building confidence and trust in his protection. Nix generally has good pocket presence and doesn’t just take off running. Developing this confidence is crucial, and it starts with precise design in the dropback pass game.”
With the spotlight on both Nix and the running game, Payton’s determination is palpable. The Broncos need these elements to click as they look to turn their season around.
