Jayden Daniels once again stole the show during his second taste of NFL game-day action with the Miami Dolphins in Preseason Week 2. The Washington Commanders are playing it smart with their promising quarterback, and while they haven’t officially named him the starter, it feels like it’s just a matter of time after his sensational offseason performance.
Daniels Shines in Limited NFL Debut
Daniels’ NFL debut against the New York Jets may have been brief, but it was a tantalizing teaser of what this No. 2 overall pick can deliver for the organization both now and in the future. The former LSU standout followed up his debut with an electrifying performance at a joint practice with the Dolphins. It was a red-zone efficiency showcase, one that’s left fans and coaches buzzing with anticipation.
Keeping Expectations in Check
Nobody anticipated a long stint for Daniels at Hard Rock Stadium. Head Coach Dan Quinn clearly has a long-term vision and is bringing the rookie along cautiously. With J.J. McCarthy’s recent injury nightmare with the Minnesota Vikings serving as a cautionary tale, the Commanders cannot risk their newfound gem.
Yet, despite the Dolphins’ best efforts to bottle him up, Daniels demonstrated his prowess during his limited playtime. The Heisman Trophy winner was methodical, dissecting the defense and delivering under pressure, further fueling the excitement.
Opening Drive Highlights
Daniels picked up right where he left off in Preseason Week 1, taking what the defense gave him and making some impressive throws under duress. Dyami Brown made a couple of clutch receptions, keeping the drive alive. Meanwhile, Daniels’ growing bond with Terry McLaurin was on full display, with McLaurin making the biggest gain of Washington’s opening drive. A touch of no-huddle offense added to the drama.
Unfortunately, the drive fizzled out in Miami territory. Special teams woes echoed loudly as Riley Patterson missed a 49-yard attempt by a wide margin, raising questions about the Commanders’ kicking situation heading into Week 1.
Showcasing Mobility and Command
On his second drive, Daniels showcased his dual-threat capabilities. His supreme mobility was on full display, though Coach Quinn emphasized the importance of knowing when to slide once the first down is secured. Unfazed, Daniels moved the ball downfield effortlessly and impressed with his impeccable timing.
However, another promising drive was thwarted, this time by a pivotal holding penalty on Andrew Wylie. Despite this setback, the field goal unit redeemed themselves, ensuring Daniels had some points to show for his efforts.
Overall Performance
Overall, Daniels delivered another compelling performance. His command at the line of scrimmage, accuracy both in and out of the pocket, and sensational release mechanics were all on display. Though it was just a small sample size, there was plenty to like.
Washington wisely opted to take Daniels out of harm’s way afterward. He completed a whopping 83.33 percent of his passes for 78 yards, with no touchdowns, no interceptions, and a solid passer rating of 93.8. On the ground, he added 13 yards from two carries.
Performance Grade: B
Daniels continues to exhibit signs of being a true franchise quarterback. While perfection is a tall order and the offensive line remains a significant concern, the new face of the Commanders left a mighty strong impression.
Looking Ahead
Whether Daniels will get more experience in Washington’s preseason finale against the New England Patriots remains to be seen. Regardless of the coaching staff’s decision, one thing is certain: this quarterback is ready to take the NFL by storm starting in 2024.
