Indianapolis Colts Pro Bowl defensive end DeForest Buckner suffered a sprained ankle in Sunday’s game, which is expected to sideline him for Week 3, NFL Network reported on Monday.
Buckner, 30, was dramatically carted off the field in the third quarter of the Colts’ narrow 16-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. The injury occurred when Packers running back Emanuel Wilson landed on Buckner’s ankle, causing a sprain that will require some recovery time.
Although the initial X-rays were negative, Buckner is slated to undergo an MRI on Monday to further assess the injury. The Colts organization remains optimistic, suggesting that the injury may not be severe.
The Colts (0-2) faced additional setbacks, with rookie defensive end Laiatu Latu also suffering a hip injury against the Packers.
This isn’t Buckner’s first time battling injuries this season; he missed practice last week due to a back issue. The resilient veteran has remarkably missed just two games in his impressive nine-year career. The Colts are preparing to host the Chicago Bears (1-1) in Week 3.
Buckner has already made his presence felt this season with 1.5 sacks and seven tackles in just two games (one start). With a career tally of 62.5 sacks from his time with both the San Francisco 49ers (2016-19) and the Colts, Buckner has consistently proven his elite status. He has started 126 of 131 games, earning three Pro Bowl selections and first-team All-Pro honors in 2020.
In a testament to his value, Buckner signed a two-year contract extension with the Colts in April, ensuring he remains a pivotal figure for the team. This extension will kick in next season, following the completion of his current four-year, $84 million deal.
The Colts will undoubtedly miss Buckner’s presence on the field, but the team and its loyal fans are hopeful for a swift and strong return. Here’s wishing DeForest a speedy recovery! Let’s get ready for an exciting Week 3 matchup!
