Drew Allar Reflects on Postseason Prep Changes Ahead of 2023 Bowl Game

Drew Allar reflects on the differences in postseason preparation compared to the 2023 bowl game experience.

The excitement is palpable as the Penn State Nittany Lions gear up for their next challenge in the expanded, 12-team College Football Playoff. After a stunning 38-point victory over SMU, the team is focused on maintaining that momentum as they prepare to face the Boise State Broncos. Quarterback Drew Allar is at the forefront of this preparation, emphasizing that this playoff run is a different beast compared to the traditional bowl games.

Allar reflects on the playoff preparation

Drew Allar recognizes that the preparation window for this year’s playoff is notably shorter than last year’s. “I mean, I think it just starts with — the window was shorter this year than it was last year. Obviously, last year we had an extended time to prepare for the Peach Bowl. This year, it was kind of like a quicker turnaround, with the Big Ten Championship and then playing again like, two weeks later,” Allar explained during a press conference ahead of the quarterfinal showdown.

This year’s playoff format has certainly changed the dynamics of preparation. “But at the end of the day, our process — I love that we’re a process-oriented team, and our process drives the way we function as a program. For us, it wasn’t really anything different, which I like, just because it’s our normal routine and habit and things like that. It wasn’t much different for me personally, but it was probably just a little bit of a quicker turnaround than it was, compared to last year,” he added.

Looking back at last season’s Peach Bowl

Reflecting on last year’s Peach Bowl, the Nittany Lions faced a tough challenge against Ole Miss and ultimately came up short. With a longer preparation period, they were unable to secure the win. However, Allar is optimistic about the current season, especially after a strong performance throughout the regular season in 2024. The team is eager to ensure that their journey doesn’t end prematurely against the Broncos.

Time will tell if Penn State can rise to the occasion, but the spotlight will undoubtedly be on Drew Allar as he takes the field on New Year’s Eve. The pressure is mounting for the star quarterback, and fans are eager to see how he handles the intensity of the playoff atmosphere.

Understanding Boise State’s defense

As the Nittany Lions prepare for their matchup, Allar has taken the time to analyze Boise State’s formidable defense. He respects their discipline and execution on the field, noting, “I think defensively, they’re a really sound unit. You don’t see many mistakes in the run game, like guys in the same gap. Not many blown coverages. So, I think they’re a very sound and disciplined group, and that starts with the coaching staff. They do a great job in getting those guys aligned in the right spots.”

Boise State has proven to be tough defensively this season, ranking 32nd in the nation for scoring defense, allowing just 21.9 points per game. They also sit at 61st in total defense, giving up 361.9 yards per game. Allar recognizes the challenge they present, stating, “I think the biggest thing that sticks out about the players is just how hard they play to the whistle. They’re playing through the whistle every single snap there is. So, a lot of respect for these guys. They’ve had a great season. So, it’s going to be a fun matchup.”

Penn State’s offensive arsenal

Fortunately for Drew Allar, he isn’t alone in this endeavor. The Nittany Lions boast a dynamic offensive lineup that can exploit Boise State’s defensive strategies. The running back duo of Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen has been a key component of the offense, providing a powerful ground game. Additionally, tight end Tyler Warren has emerged as one of the top offensive players in college football this season, adding another layer of complexity to Penn State’s attack.

With these offensive weapons at his disposal, Allar is poised to lead his team effectively against the Broncos. The combination of a solid running game and a potent passing attack could be the formula for success as they look to advance further in the playoffs.

The stakes are high

The stakes couldn’t be higher as Penn State prepares to take on Boise State. With the experience of last season’s playoff disappointment still fresh in their minds, the Nittany Lions are determined to make a statement this year. Allar’s leadership and the team’s collective resolve will be crucial as they navigate this high-pressure environment.

As fans eagerly await the kickoff, one thing is clear: the Nittany Lions are ready to prove themselves on the national stage. Will Drew Allar rise to the occasion and lead his team to victory? The answer will unfold on New Year’s Eve, and college football fans everywhere will be watching closely.
