Ducks HC Discusses Strategy for Facing Ryan Day’s Buckeyes in Rose Bowl

Ducks HC emphasizes the challenge posed by Ryan Day's Buckeyes in the upcoming Rose Bowl showdown.

The stage is set for an electrifying rematch in the Rose Bowl, as the undefeated Oregon Ducks prepare to take on the formidable Ohio State Buckeyes. This highly anticipated clash promises to be a thrilling encounter, with both teams eager to prove their mettle on one of college football’s grandest stages. Head coach Dan Lanning is already gearing up for this monumental challenge against Ryan Day and his squad.

The Ducks and the Buckeyes previously met on October 12, where Oregon edged out Ohio State in a nail-biting 32-31 victory. That game was a true test for Dillon Gabriel and his teammates, showcasing their resilience and skill. Fast forward nearly three months, and both teams find themselves in a different scenario, with the stakes raised even higher.

Lanning’s respect for the Buckeyes

In the lead-up to this pivotal matchup, Lanning took a moment to reflect on the challenge that lies ahead. He expressed profound respect for Ryan Day’s program, acknowledging the talent and depth that the Buckeyes bring to the field. “Obviously Ohio State’s a great team and the path to the end is tough, which is exciting for our team and certainly for me,” Lanning remarked.

Lanning emphasized the importance of preparation and focus as his team gears up for the game. “Super excited. Getting the opportunity to play great teams, that’s what it’s about. This part of the year, I think when you play great teams, that gives you some extra motivation to go work really hard, to be prepared and ready to be out there on the field.

The journey to the Rose Bowl

The Ducks have had a dream season, finishing undefeated in a highly competitive landscape. This remarkable achievement has earned them a coveted spot in the Rose Bowl, a testament to their hard work and determination. Lanning highlighted the significance of this opportunity, stating, “It’s something we’re extremely excited about, obviously getting to play a great opponent in Ohio State. I think that that’s a great representation of what the Big Ten is capable of. Having these two teams with the opportunity to face off in the ‘Granddaddy of Them All.’ We’re super excited our players, our staff, certainly myself about getting this opportunity at the Rose Bowl.

However, Lanning is keenly aware that this matchup is not just another game in the program’s history. He understands the weight of the occasion and the need to treat it with the seriousness it deserves. “Trying to maintain a balance between the excitement of playing in such a game and giving it the seriousness it deserves,” he said, underlining the importance of focus amidst the thrill.

Ohio State’s quest for revenge

As the Buckeyes prepare for this rematch, they are undoubtedly looking for redemption after their narrow defeat in Eugene. Lanning recognizes the fierce competitive spirit that Ohio State embodies and the potential they possess to inflict damage on his Ducks. “I won’t really get into the differences, but they’re a really good team. I don’t know if there’s a more talented team in the nation,” he stated, highlighting the depth of talent on Ohio State’s roster.

Lanning elaborated on the challenges posed by Ohio State’s offense, noting their elite playmakers and formidable offensive line. “Obviously they’ve got great weapons outside at wideout and across the board, their tight end’s a big target. The running backs are elite. I think they’ve settled in with their offensive line, and that’s really shown up,” he explained. The Ducks will need to be at their best to counter the Buckeyes’ relentless attack.

In his final thoughts, Lanning remarked on Ohio State’s ability to adapt and execute on both sides of the ball. “Schematically they pitch a lot of different things to you on both sides of the ball that stress you. The ability to play with tempo at times on offense, and then slow it down and come out of a huddle. The shifts and motions, all those things show up,” he noted, emphasizing the complexity of the challenge they will face.
