Former Florida Football Star Earl Okine Faces Drug and Weapon Charges

Former Florida football player Earl Okine faces multiple drug and weapon charges following his arrest.

In a shocking turn of events, former Florida Gators defensive lineman Earl Okine was arrested on Wednesday night. The incident unfolded when Okine was stopped by an Alachua County Sheriff’s deputy for allegedly failing to stop at a stop sign. What followed was a discovery that has raised eyebrows and sparked conversations about the former athlete’s choices.

Details of the Arrest

According to reports, during the traffic stop, deputies established probable cause to search Okine’s vehicle. This search led to the discovery of a troubling assortment of items: 1.9 grams of crystalized Methamphetamine, a small quantity of Marijuana, and a loaded Smith and Wesson handgun equipped with an extended magazine containing multiple rounds of ammunition. The charges against Okine are serious, including Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of a Firearm while in the Commission of a Felony, and Possession of Marijuana less than 20 grams.

Okine’s College Career

A native of Gainesville, Okine’s journey began when he chose to play for the Gators coming out of high school. He spent five seasons with the team, contributing to the 2008 national championship squad, although his significant contributions didn’t come until 2009. Over the course of his college career, Okine recorded 27 tackles, three tackles for loss, and one sack in 42 games played. His time with the Gators showcased his potential, but it was the NFL that would ultimately offer him a chance to continue his football journey.

Transition to the NFL

Despite going undrafted in the 2013 NFL Draft, Okine caught the attention of the Houston Texans, who signed him as an undrafted free agent. His NFL career, however, was brief. The Indianapolis Colts were the only team to put him on the field, where he played five games and recorded five tackles and a tackle for loss in 2015. Unfortunately, he was waived the following season, marking a swift end to his professional football aspirations.

Future Stars: DJ Lagway’s Rising Profile

While Okine’s story takes a troubling turn, the spotlight on the Florida Gators continues to shine brightly with the emergence of quarterback DJ Lagway. As the 2025 season approaches, Lagway is generating significant buzz, and for good reason. On3’s
