From Struggle to Success: How Sobriety Transformed Steve Sarkisian’s Coaching Career at Texas

Steve Sarkisian's journey to sobriety transformed his coaching, leading Texas to the College Football Playoff.

“Texas is back” has been a phrase echoed numerous times over the last decade, but this time, it feels like the Longhorns are truly reclaiming their place among college football’s elite. After finishing their Big 12 tenure with only one loss, Texas has secured a spot in the College Football Playoff and stands just one victory away from a national championship. Leading the charge is their standout quarterback, Quinn Ewers, who has emerged as one of the nation’s top talents.

Steve Sarkisian’s journey to redemption

Before Texas could experience this remarkable turnaround, head coach Steve Sarkisian had to confront his own demons. His battle with alcoholism once cast a shadow over his coaching career, leaving his future uncertain. However, Sarkisian has found a new lease on life and leadership as he guides the Longhorns, positioning them as serious contenders for a national title.

Overcoming addiction: A personal struggle

Sarkisian’s struggle with alcoholism was not a secret. In 2015, while serving as head coach at USC, he took an indefinite leave of absence after arriving at a pre-practice meeting intoxicated. This incident led to his firing the next day. Reports surfaced that his assistants suspected he was under the influence during a game against Arizona State just weeks prior to his dismissal. Furthermore, the Los Angeles Times detailed several alcohol-related incidents from his tenure at Washington.

It was hitting rock bottom at USC that finally pushed Sarkisian to seek the help he desperately needed. Inspired by then-Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia’s decision to enter rehab for alcoholism, Sarkisian made the choice to turn his life around. Even after completing rehab, he committed to attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings to maintain his sobriety.

A mentor in Nick Saban

Another pivotal figure in Sarkisian’s journey was Nick Saban. In 2016, Saban offered Sarkisian a position as an offensive analyst at Alabama, providing him with a fresh start. By the end of that season, Sarkisian was promoted to offensive coordinator, where he coached future NFL stars like Tua Tagovailoa and DeVonta Smith. His success in Tuscaloosa not only bolstered his coaching credentials but also reinforced his commitment to sobriety.

In 2020, Sarkisian faced a life-threatening health scare when a comprehensive physical exam revealed a heart condition that required emergency surgery. Had it gone undetected, he could have faced dire consequences. Saban’s support during this time was crucial, as he helped Sarkisian navigate both his personal and professional challenges. After recovering, Sarkisian reflected on how these experiences shaped him into a better coach and person.

Turning point: The Texas Longhorns

Fast forward to the present, and Sarkisian is now at the helm of the Texas Longhorns, leading them to a remarkable season. A defining moment came when Texas upset Alabama in September, a victory that not only boosted the team’s confidence but also solidified their place in the College Football Playoff. Without that win, the Longhorns might not be in the position they are today, eyeing a potential rematch with the Crimson Tide for the national championship.

The upcoming challenge

As Texas prepares for the Sugar Bowl against Washington, a team Sarkisian once coached while battling his addiction, the stakes couldn’t be higher. A victory would propel the Longhorns closer to the pinnacle of college football, and for Sarkisian, it would be a testament to his resilience and growth. He often reflects on his past, using it as motivation to connect with his players and inspire them to overcome their own challenges.

Eight years of sobriety and leadership

Now, with eight years of sobriety under his belt, Sarkisian stands as a symbol of hope for anyone grappling with addiction. His journey has not only transformed his life but has also enriched his coaching philosophy. He emphasizes the importance of perseverance, drawing from his own experiences to better understand the struggles his players face.

“I think it really shaped me, quite frankly,” Sarkisian shared in a 2021 interview. His ability to empathize with his players has created a strong bond, fostering an environment of trust and support within the team.

A new chapter for Texas football

As the Longhorns gear up for their playoff run, the excitement surrounding the program is palpable. Fans are hopeful that this season marks the beginning of a new era for Texas football, one where they can consistently compete for championships. With Sarkisian leading the way, the Longhorns are not just back—they’re poised to make a significant impact on the national stage.

In this thrilling chapter of college football, the story of Steve Sarkisian is one of redemption, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. As Texas aims for glory, Sarkisian’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that overcoming adversity can lead to remarkable achievements, both on and off the field.
