Last year, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell flirted with the tantalizing idea of a four-team European division. But this year, folks, Goodell has hit the brakes on that ambitious vision.
Goodell’s Pivot on International Expansion
In an electrifying interview with NBC’s Kaylee Hartung, right before Friday night’s thrilling clash in Brazil between the Packers and Eagles, Goodell was quizzed about a potential international division.
“I think the first thing we’re going to really focus on is the ownership’s approved eight games already,” Goodell remarked with a determination that could move mountains. “I hope to get that to 16 at some point in the future. Let’s see how that goes, but I do believe there are a number of cities internationally that could do it. It’s always a competitive side we worry about.”
The Competitive Conundrum
Goodell has every reason to be concerned. The idea of moving a team to Europe isn’t just pulling a rabbit out of the hat—it’s a logistical labyrinth! There are myriad factors to consider: from the complexities of tax rates and exchange rates to the challenge of draft picks potentially giving a cold shoulder to overseas relocations. Not to mention, away-game travel would morph from a one-night adventure to a multi-week odyssey. European teams could end up in a David vs. Goliath battle—and that’s before they even reach the field! And if the league attempts to level the playing field with perks like extra draft picks or cap space, any team excelling under such conditions could be accused of having an unfair advantage.
Mapping Out the Future
With the current 17-game regular-season format, lining up 16 international games per year makes a world of sense. Imagine this: every team enjoying eight home games, eight road games, and one thrilling neutral-site showdown. Pure poetry in motion, isn’t it?! Now, this balanced symphony will go out the window if – or rather, when – the NFL decides to stretch the season to 18 games.
A Moving Target
But hold on to your hats! Should the NFL expand to 19 games, this concept would make a roaring comeback. And it would waltz back out just as quickly if the league stretches to 20 games. This continuous metamorphosis is what makes the NFL such a living, breathing entity—always keeping us on our toes!
The anticipation is palpable, the stakes are sky-high, and the field is wide open. Stay tuned, fans, for the NFL’s next big move. As they say in football, the game isn’t over until the final whistle blows!
