Jerry Jones Holds Off on Dak Prescott Extension Before Season

Jerry Jones anticipates that Dak Prescott's contract extension won't be finalized before the season begins.

Now that the Cowboys have inked their star receiver CeeDee Lamb to a long-term extension, it’s time to shift the spotlight to quarterback Dak Prescott.

Dak’s Turn: The Clock is Ticking

Owner Jerry Jones made it clear: the Cowboys don’t foresee finalizing a deal with Prescott before the season’s kickoff against the Browns on Sept. 8. “We don’t need to get this done before the season,” Jones emphasized to Clarence Hill of DLLS. “Because it’s in all of our interest, Dak and everybody, to have a great season. And as a matter of fact, that’s probably not realistic to think before the season. But my thought sitting right here is we’ll have Dak [as Cowboys quarterback in 2025 and beyond]. But all I’m going to say is this: It’s not done yet.”

Countdown to Free Agency

Prescott is in the final year of his hefty four-year, $160 million contract, shouldering a $55 million cap hit. If he’s not on the Cowboys roster by 2025, they’ll be grappling with a staggering $40 million in dead cap space. With no-trade and no-tag clauses in his deal, Prescott holds the cards and can opt to test the free agency waters, potentially raking in $60 million a year.

No Roadblocks Here

Unlike some teams, the lone star state’s pride doesn’t stop contract talks once the pigskin starts flying. Although Jones sounds a tad uncertain about locking down Prescott for 2025 and beyond, he’s clearly optimistic. “I think I am. I am,” Jones explained. “But I understand completely. I understand our challenge. But confident is not a word for me here. I feel that I think that we can do it. We have not figured it out yet.”

The Cowboys spent two years hashing out Prescott’s current contract, and two more years have passed without an extension. As it stands, it’s a coin toss: either Prescott returns for his 10th season in 2025, or the Cowboys could be hunting for a new field general.

Faith & Postseason Woes

Despite Prescott’s 2-5 postseason record, Jones has unshakable faith in his quarterback’s capacity to lead the Cowboys to gridiron glory. “Yes, there is no question in my mind. Yes, we can win with Dak,” Jones asserted. “It’s just not a question in my mind.”

The million-dollar, or rather 60-million-dollar-a-year, question is whether the Cowboys will secure Prescott with a long-term deal before he could potentially hit free agency in 2025. Time will tell if the stars in Dallas align for their star QB.

So, Cowboys fans, buckle up! This season is about more than just the games – it’s a high-stakes waiting game for your franchise quarterback’s future.
