Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is fervently hoping his right ankle injury won’t sideline him for this Sunday’s crucial AFC West showdown against the visiting Kansas City Chiefs.
Herbert was forced to exit last weekend’s clash, a 20-10 defeat to the Pittsburgh Steelers, after aggravating an ankle injury initially sustained in Week 2 against the Carolina Panthers.
“It’s early days, but I’m committed to doing everything in my power to play,” Herbert told reporters with determination on Wednesday. “If we stay on track with our weight training and treatment, that’s always the goal.”
Herbert added that he feels healthier now than he did mid-week before the Steelers game.
“I feel better than I did last Wednesday,” Herbert asserted. “As long as we continue to progress and improve, we’ll avoid setbacks. I genuinely believe we’re heading in the right direction.”
Herbert was listed as a limited participant in Wednesday’s practice but remains unfazed about Sunday’s readiness.
“I don’t believe worrying helps,” Herbert said with a calm confidence. “You have to take it day by day and evaluate how it feels. If it’s not safe or smart to play, we’ll make that call, but I have been improving.”
Herbert shared positive news after undergoing x-rays and an MRI. He wore a protective boot on Sunday and Monday, aiming for a swift recovery.
If Herbert is unable to participate, Taylor Heinicke would step in as the starter against the unbeaten Chiefs (3-0). Heinicke filled in against the Steelers, completing both of his pass attempts but suffering three sacks.
Despite the setback, Herbert managed to complete 12 of 18 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown against Pittsburgh. This season, he has already accumulated 399 passing yards, four touchdowns, and a single interception.
The Chargers are also grappling with injuries to other key players. Star outside linebacker Joey Bosa (hip), offensive tackle Rashawn Slater (pectoral), and Joe Alt (knee) all missed Wednesday’s practice. Sadly, Slater and Alt are not expected to suit up against the Chiefs.
As the Chargers brace for a pivotal game in the division, the resilience and determination of Justin Herbert and his teammates will be put to the ultimate test. Stay tuned, NFL fans—this is one matchup you won’t want to miss!
