Kyren Williams Embraces Punt Returns: More Plays, More Impact

Kyren Williams is excited to return punts, seeing it as another chance to make key plays for his team.

The Rams Are Betting Big on Kyren Williams: The New Punt Return Maestro

The Rams have yet to officially list Kyren Williams as their designated punt returner on the depth chart, but make no bones about it—for this season, he will be the man receiving the punts. The team is eager to make full use of his dynamic skillset, aiming to get him the ball even more than the impressive 264 times he touched it last season. Last year, Williams managed only three punt returns and one kick return.

“I get to make more plays,” Williams said, via Stu Jackson of the Rams’ website. “And that’s just going to show everyone what else I can do in the game of football. Playing with a lot of green grass, getting great blocks from my jammers up front, and starting those punts… I’m thrilled to showcase another phase of my abilities.”

The Mastermind McVay’s Strategic Decision

Head Coach Sean McVay has decided to utilize Williams as a punt returner. “We feel comfortable putting our starting running back on special teams,” McVay said, “because of the confidence we have in Blake Corum and Ronnie Rivers to step in if needed.” This strategic move is aimed at maximizing the playmaking abilities of Williams, while keeping a solid backup plan close at hand.

Williams’ college stats include 14 punt returns, where he averaged just over 10 yards per return. He took his three returns last season for a total of 21 yards. So, when McVay made this call, you can bet it was backed by a pile of data and gut instincts.

Playing Like an “Express Train on Tracks”

Williams, Ramo-style, is excited about the opportunity: “I have some experience in the NFL doing it. I’m eager to make more plays.” And why wouldn’t he be? Last season, Williams earned Pro Bowl honors with 228 rushes and 32 receptions. That figure stands a good chance of rising, despite the team’s faith in Corum and Rivers.

“Anytime you can put the ball in a playmaker’s hands, it’s good for the Rams,” noted offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur. “So if 23 is touching the ball, it’s a fiesta for us.”

The Ram’s decision isn’t just about numbers; it’s about unleashing a dynamo who can turn every punt return into a potential highlight reel. As the excitement builds, one thing’s clear: Kyren Williams is all set to light it up, and the Rams’ faithful can expect more fireworks whenever he’s on the field. Buckle up, la gente, because it’s going to be a thrilling ride.
