Next Generation of Georgia QBs: Meet Gunner Stockton and Jaden Rashada as Carson Beck’s Successors

Georgia's QB depth chart shows Gunner Stockton and Jaden Rashada poised to succeed Carson Beck in 2024.

Much of the conversation surrounding the Georgia Bulldogs this season has centered on the performance of starting quarterback Carson Beck. With an alarming total of 12 interceptions—leading all FBS players—his struggles have undeniably impacted the Bulldogs’ offensive output, which has regressed compared to last season. As fans and analysts ponder the implications of Beck’s play, a pressing question arises: “If Georgia decides to bench Beck, who steps in as the backup quarterback?”

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart has firmly stated, “absolutely not,” when asked about making a quarterback change. This declaration, however, does not erase the curiosity surrounding the options available behind Beck. Let’s take a closer look at the players who could potentially take the reins of the Bulldog offense if a shift becomes necessary.

Georgia QB depth chart

Currently, Georgia’s quarterback depth chart looks like this:

1. Carson Beck
2. Gunner Stockton
3. Ryan Puglisi OR Jaden Rashada

At the forefront is redshirt sophomore Gunner Stockton, who stands as the primary backup. A former four-star recruit from Georgia’s 2022 class, Stockton was ranked as the No. 7 quarterback in his class. Despite his promising pedigree, he has seen limited action on the field. Typically, he has been utilized in games where Georgia has built a comfortable lead, which raises questions about his readiness for a more prominent role.

This season, Stockton made a brief appearance during Georgia’s final possession against Clemson in Week 1 and recorded a 21-yard completion against Tennessee Tech. Overall, his stats reflect a modest experience: just 22 completions for 238 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Can he step up if called upon? That remains to be seen.

Behind Stockton, the depth chart features two intriguing prospects: true freshman Ryan Puglisi and Arizona State transfer Jaden Rashada. Puglisi, a four-star quarterback from the class of 2024, hails from Avon, Connecticut. He was ranked as the No. 10 quarterback in his class and boasts impressive high school stats, having thrown for 3,597 yards, 30 touchdowns, and added three rushing touchdowns during his last two seasons at Avon Old Farms High School. Will his high school success translate to the college level?

On the other hand, Jaden Rashada brings a unique story to the Bulldogs. A former four-star prospect from the class of 2023, Rashada initially committed to the University of Florida but found himself embroiled in an NIL controversy that led to his release from his letter of intent. Currently suing Florida and head coach Billy Napier over the situation, Rashada ultimately signed with Arizona State, where he faced injury challenges that limited his playtime. In just three games last season, he completed 44 passes for 485 yards, four touchdowns, and three interceptions. With such a tumultuous journey, can Rashada find stability and success at Georgia?

Smart’s Perspective on the Backup QBs

Smart has emphasized the importance of preparation for his backup quarterbacks. “They get work each and every week,” he said about Beck’s backups. “We throw them in there and mix them in. They get reps. Ryan Puglisi gets reps. They come down sometimes and throw with us on the scouts to get even more work.” This commitment to giving the backups opportunities to develop is crucial, especially as the season progresses.

He continued, “I think every rep you can possibly get right now, you’re just like, ‘How many times can I get a quarterback to go back there and have to make a decision and grow as a player?’” Smart’s focus on growth and readiness speaks volumes about the coaching staff’s strategy moving forward.

Georgia QB recruits for 2025

Looking ahead, Georgia’s recruiting efforts for the 2025 class have already begun to take shape. Currently, they have one quarterback committed: four-star Ryan Montgomery, who is ranked as the No. 10 quarterback from the class of 2025. Montgomery has been committed to Georgia since April 2024, and his addition could bolster the Bulldogs’ future quarterback prospects.

Additionally, the coaching staff is reportedly pursuing five-star quarterback Julian Lewis, who recently reclassified from the 2026 to the 2025 class. Lewis, who has been committed to USC and Lincoln Riley’s program since August 2023, hails from Carrollton, Georgia. His upcoming visit to Georgia this weekend for the Dawgs’ showdown against No. 7 Tennessee adds an exciting layer to the recruiting narrative.

As the season unfolds, the spotlight remains on Carson Beck. Can he overcome his turnover issues and lead the Bulldogs effectively? Or will Georgia’s coaching staff be forced to make a change? With a talented group of quarterbacks waiting in the wings, the Bulldogs’ future at the position is filled with potential and uncertainty. One thing is for sure: the journey ahead will be one to watch closely.
