Packers’ Stumble: Colts Capitalize on Strong Ground Game and Dominant Defense

Packers' struggling run game and porous defense allowed Colts to capitalize, sealing a victory.

Malik Willis threw a touchdown and the home Green Bay Packers capitalized on an impressive ground game to secure a thrilling 16-10 victory over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

Stepping in for the injured Jordan Love, Willis connected on a 14-yard pass to Dontayvion Wicks to culminate a sterling 11-play, 82-yard drive in the first quarter.

In his fourth NFL start and first with Green Bay following his acquisition from the Tennessee Titans on August 26 for a seventh-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Willis completed 12 of 14 passes for 122 yards.

Josh Jacobs delivered a powerhouse performance with 32 carries for 151 yards, while Willis added 41 rushing yards for the Packers (1-1), who exquisitely maintained their 12th straight home opener victory.

The Packers dominated time of possession (40:11-19:49) and converted 10 of 17 third-down attempts, while the Colts struggled, going just 2-for-9.

Rookie kicker Brayden Narveson coolly slotted field goals from 46, 42, and 34 yards for Green Bay.

For Indianapolis, Anthony Richardson completed 17 of 34 passes for 204 yards, with one touchdown and three interceptions. Jonathan Taylor, showcasing his Wisconsin roots, rushed for 103 yards on 12 carries, and Alec Pierce caught a 4-yard touchdown for the Colts (0-2).

Green Bay pounded the Colts’ defense with their running game right from the opening drive, rushing for 52 yards before Narveson nailed his first field goal to break the deadlock.

Jacobs nearly widened the Packers’ lead on the subsequent drive but heartbreakingly fumbled at the goal line.

Narveson struck again with his second field goal before Matt Gay’s 34-yard kick trimmed the Packers’ lead to 13-3 with 4:32 remaining in the third quarter.

Gay’s misfire on a 50-yard field goal attempt early in the fourth quarter set the stage for Narveson’s third successful field goal, effectively sealing the win for Green Bay.

The Packers’ potent ground attack and resilient momentum underscored a gripping game that left fans exhilarated and eagerly anticipating the next showdown.
