In the high-stakes world of NFL football, Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix is already making headlines. Despite being sacked seven times over his first five NFL outings, head coach Sean Payton lauds Nix’s uncanny ability to elude even more sacks with his athleticism and quick decision-making.
In Week 5, the Broncos notched a win against the Las Vegas Raiders, where Nix endured three sacks. Notably, this came after an impressive two-game stretch where the rookie remained untouched.
“In my experience,” Payton shared on Wednesday, “it’s incredibly challenging to gauge a player’s ability to progress swiftly and make quick decisions at the college level. Yet, it’s a vital skill to avoid unnecessary sacks. If you linger too long, it’s like adding another ‘One Mississippi’ with the ball in your hands.”
Payton continued, “Nix’s ability to not only move but to process the game at an advanced pace is a huge asset.”
This weekend’s showdown with the Los Angeles Chargers promises to be a litmus test for Nix’s breakaway capabilities. With right tackle Alex Palczewski and center Luke Wattenberg nursing ankle injuries, the Broncos’ offensive line depth will be stretched thin. Palczewski himself is filling in for starting right tackle Mike McGlinchey, who is on the verge of returning from injured reserve.
The Chargers boast an imposing defensive unit, racking up 11 sacks in just four games. Led by outside linebacker Khalil Mack and his 2.5 sacks, this squad is coming off a much-needed bye week, albeit with 17 players on Wednesday’s injury report.
Payton praised the Chargers’ defensive prowess: “Their explosiveness in both the running and passing games is undeniable. They play with impeccable technique and have a talented roster executing a great scheme. After a touchdown sequence, I enjoy evaluating their explosive plays, and they finish those sequences quicker than most. With a limited sample, we also examined the preseason. They’ve done well.”
The Broncos showed agility on the roster as the team added veteran forward Cam Fleming to the practice squad and placed guard Will Sherman on injured reserve. They also elevated inside linebacker Levelle Baily to the active roster and added wide receivers AT Perry and Kaden Davis to the practice squad.
Though Nix has thrown four interceptions this season, he has admirably held onto the ball over the course of 31 carries, with zero fumbles. The Chargers, allowing a mere 12.5 points per game and holding a plus-5 turnover margin, will undoubtedly provide a formidable challenge.
Nix shared his philosophy on limiting sacks and turnovers: “For me, the key is understanding timing, protections, and getting the ball out swiftly. Don’t stand there holding the ball. Those three sacks on Sunday are ones I’d like to have back because sacks derail drives. Overcoming them is tough, so I strive to minimize them.”
He added, “You can’t eliminate sacks without excellent protection from the line. They’re doing a phenomenal job.”
