Saints Strengthen Roster: Snagging Connor McGovern from Jets’ Practice Squad

The Saints have bolstered their roster by signing center Connor McGovern from the Jets' practice squad.

New Orleans is making moves, folks! In a bold and strategic swoop, the Saints have signed the talented center Connor McGovern from the Jets’ practice squad, an action announced with gusto this past Friday. With their offensive line resembling a battered warrior after a fierce battle, the Saints had no choice but to reinforce their ranks ahead of Monday night’s all-important clash against the Chiefs.

The Thin Red Line

The Saints’ offensive line is about as worn down as a well-loved pair of cleats. Erik McCoy, the starting center, is stuck on injured reserve nursing a stubborn groin injury, much like a stalwart knight temporarily out of battle. Right guard Cesar Ruiz found himself sidelined last week due to a pesky knee injury, and he has yet to grace the practice field. Shane Lemieux, McCoy’s would-be replacement, joined the injured brigade, shackled by a troublesome ankle. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, starting left guard Lucas Patrick popped up on the practice report on Friday with, you guessed it, a groin issue.

A Seasoned Warrior Joins the Ranks

Enter Connor McGovern, a seasoned warrior of the gridiron with a whopping 91 career starts snapping the ball at both guard and center. Last season, the Jets trusted him for seven starts—until a misfortunate encounter with a dislocated kneecap ended his season. But don’t worry, Saints fans—this guy is tougher than a two-dollar steak.

What’s intriguing is the Saints’ offensive line coach, John Benton, who served as McGovern’s mentor back in his Jets days from 2021 to 2022. A reunion of sorts, between coach and protégé, that could very well be the shot of adrenaline the Saints need.

Roster Shuffle Drama

Ah, but life in the NFL is, as they say, no more than the rotation of a merry-go-round. To make space for McGovern, the Saints have parted ways with second-year receiver A.T. Perry. Such is the game: relentless as a Peruvian thunderstorm and as demanding as a quarterback in the fourth quarter.

The game clock is ticking, the Chiefs lie in wait, and the Saints have rolled their dice. Can the addition of McGovern be the knight in shining armor that they desperately need? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure—it’s going to be one heck of a ride!
