Steve Gleason Hospitalized Amid Hurricane Francine in Louisiana

Steve Gleason was hospitalized as Hurricane Francine struck Louisiana, highlighting his resilience amidst adversity.

Steve Gleason is currently recovering in the hospital after undergoing a medical event in the midst of Hurricane Francine hitting Louisiana.

Gleason’s Indomitable Spirit Faces Yet Another Challenge

Steve Gleason, the man whose unforgettable blocked punt during the Saints’ first game back in New Orleans post-Hurricane Katrina etched his name into Saints history, is once again showing his indomitable spirit. This time Gleason has found himself in the hospital, battling a high fever and low blood pressure, an alarming situation worsened by the wrath of Hurricane Francine.

The Heart of the Fight

On Wednesday, Gleason, who has been heroically fighting ALS since 2011, fell seriously ill. His doctors, recognizing the gravity of his symptoms, advised immediate hospitalization. But, with Hurricane Francine raining down havoc on Louisiana, there were genuine fears that first responders might not reach him in time. Thankfully, their resolve held strong. Amidst the chaos, Gleason’s publicist, Clare Durrett, confirmed, “They immediately stabilized him and transported him to Ochsner [Medical Center in Jefferson, Louisiana]. He remains there and stable. He’s continuing to be treated and we are hopeful Steve will do what Steve does—warrior through to get home as quickly as possible.”

The Play That Defined a Franchise

Saints fans will never forget Gleason’s iconic blocked punt against the Atlanta Falcons in 2006, a moment that symbolized New Orleans’ resurgence and resilience post-Katrina. That play wasn’t just a block; it was a lifeline thrown to a city gasping for hope. Gleason epitomizes the unyielding spirit of the Crescent City, and amid the newly baptized storm named Francine, his resilience remains unshaken.

Heroic Actions Amid the Storm

With first responders navigating the murky waters and fierce winds, the successful transportation of Gleason to the hospital could be likened to a well-orchestrated game-winning drive. It was nothing short of poetic justice for a man who has spent his life overcoming insurmountable odds on and off the field.

As Steve Gleason stays under the diligent care of the medical professionals at Ochsner Medical Center, the hope is strong that he will do what he always does—fight valiantly and come through, embodying the same gritty perseverance that endeared him to fans and etched his legacy in Saints’ folklore. We join the rest of Who Dat Nation in wishing our hero a speedy recovery.

Gleason’s Legacy

Steve Gleason played for the Saints from 2000 to 2006, a career marked by his tenacity and heart. Diagnosed with ALS in 2011, he didn’t back down—typical for a man whose resilience rivals that of the toughest defensive lines. Though Hurricane Francine has thrown a new obstacle in his path, if history is any guide, Steve Gleason will face this new challenge as he has done countless times before: with courage, determination, and an unbreakable spirit.
