Top waiver wire running backs to target for fantasy football in Week 12

This week presents a significant challenge for fantasy football managers, particularly in the running back department. With the Bengals, Bills, Falcons, Jaguars, Jets, and Saints all on bye, many managers are left scrambling to fill their lineups. If you have RB1s like Chase Brown, James Cook, Bijan Robinson, Breece Hall, or Alvin Kamara, you’re likely facing at least one empty spot in your roster.

The waiver wire is looking pretty sparse for running backs at this time of year. However, fear not! I’m here to help you uncover some potential gems that could not only assist you this week but might also provide value moving forward.

Three Running Backs to Target in Week 12

While I’ve already discussed Cam Akers in previous weeks—who remains available in a staggering 83% of leagues—I won’t rehash that here. Instead, let’s dive into three running backs who are available in over 50% of ESPN leagues and could be worth your attention.

Ameer Abdullah, Las Vegas Raiders (99% Available)

Ameer Abdullah could emerge as the Raiders’ top back this week, given that Alexander Mattison (ankle) and Zamir White (quad) both exited their Week 11 game with injuries. If Abdullah steps into that primary role, he becomes the most appealing option on the waiver wire.

Although Abdullah has never been a workhorse back, he has shown reliability as a pass-catcher out of the backfield. In Week 11, he turned his one catch into a touchdown, showcasing his ability to make plays.

This week, the Raiders are up against a tough Broncos defense that just stifled the Falcons’ rushing attack. However, the Broncos have been more vulnerable against the pass, allowing the fifth-most receiving yards to opposing backs. If the game script leans negative—as many expect—Abdullah could find himself in a position to rack up points, especially in PPR leagues. This potential increases if Mattison and/or White are unable to play.

Roschon Johnson, Chicago Bears (85% Available)

Until recently, Roschon Johnson was a tough sell as a waiver wire pick-up. But after Shane Waldron’s first game as Bears offensive coordinator, Johnson’s role took a noticeable leap.

In that game, Johnson logged 30 snaps compared to D’Andre Swift’s 41. He ran 12 routes to Swift’s 18 and had 11 total opportunities versus Swift’s 16. Most importantly, Johnson had three touches inside the 10-yard line, while Swift had only one.

While this isn’t yet a full-blown split-back situation, Johnson is clearly gaining traction as the Bears approach the goal line. This week, the Bears face a Vikings defense that is among the toughest against the run. It’s fair to say that Johnson isn’t an ideal start in Week 12, but if you’re in a pinch, he holds some value this week and could be a significant asset in the future—especially if Swift were to get injured.

Jerome Ford, Cleveland Browns (65% Available)

Nick Chubb’s recovery from last year’s brutal knee injury is still a concern. His yards per rush attempt have dipped significantly compared to his career averages, and his snap count has also decreased.

Enter Jerome Ford. Last week, Chubb was on the field for just 30% of the Browns’ offensive plays, down from 61% and 35% in his previous two games. Meanwhile, Ford has seen his playing time increase, going from 46% in Week 9 to 56% in Week 11. Although he hasn’t made a significant impact yet, this week could be different.

The Browns are set to face a Steelers defense that allows the fifth-fewest rushing yards per attempt in the league (4.1) and the fourth-fewest yards per game overall. If everyone anticipates a negative game script, the Browns may need to throw the ball more. Ford is the primary pass-catching option for the Browns, and the Steelers are giving up the eighth-most passing yards to opposing RBs in the league.

While there’s no guarantee that Ford will have a breakout game, in this time of year—with so many teams on bye—managers will take any potential upside they can find.

As we navigate this challenging week in fantasy football, remember that the landscape is always shifting. The key is to stay informed and adaptable. Whether you’re targeting Abdullah, Johnson, or Ford, these players could provide the spark your lineup desperately needs.

The fantasy football season is a rollercoaster ride, and every week brings new opportunities. Keep your eyes peeled, trust your instincts, and make those strategic moves that could lead you to victory!
